Abia State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Ken Nwosu, was shot on Wednesday night by yet-to-be -identified gunmen.
The incident, according to the police,
occurred along Umuajata-Amakamma Road on the outskirts of Umuahia , the
state capital city.
The Police Public Relations Officer of
the state command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, who confirmed the incident,
explained that the commissioner was driving home around 8.05pm when the
incident occurred.
It was learnt that the commissioner was
overtaken by the gunmen in a Toyota Camry car, who immediately opened
fire on him on the lonely road.
Obgnna said, “The gunmen started
shooting at him and bullets tore through his body to the intestines.
They continued shooting indiscriminately before escaping.”
Asked whether the assailants were
assassins, kidnappers or robbers, the PPRO said, “From the look of
things it was obvious they had a hidden agenda as they did not bother to
remove any thing from him or collect his car. However, investigations
will unravel their real motive.”
The police said no arrests had been
made, but pleaded with members of the public to volunteer any useful
information that might help security operatives track down the
attackers.
At the Abia State Specialist Hospital
where doctors were battling to save the commissioner’s life, Chief
Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Augustus Mbanaso told PUNCH Metro that the Nwosu was badly injured at the intestines and femur.
The CMD said the victim’s condition was
serious when he was rushed to the hospital, adding, “Now, he is stable
after surgery was carried out on him.”
“His intestines were shattered and his
blood pressure was vey low when they brought him, but we managed him
till a level where a surgery could be carried out.”
“We had to infuse up to four pints of
blood into him before taking him to the theatre. An X-ray will be
carried out on his femur to determine the extent of damage on his bone.”
Mbanaso said he had been personally monitoring the patient on hourly basis, assuring that he was stable.
The CMD, who said Governor Theodore Orji
had already visited the victim, added that surgery had also been
conducted on a woman who was affected by stray bullet of the assailants.
Asked how he was able to mobilise other
doctors to attend to the victims considering the ongoing strike action
by doctors nationwide, Mbanaso said the hospital was run under Public
Private Partnership arrangement, hence, doctors were on hand to attend
to patients.
